3rd Annual Blood Drive to Honor Veteran and Organ Donor
On Saturday, November 9th from 10:00am-4:00pm there will be a ConnectLife blood drive and fundraiser held at UB’s Newman Center (495 Skinnersville Road) to honor the memory of Shawn J. McMullen.
A native of Williamsville, Shawn was a courageous and caring man who served his country as a soldier in the U.S. Army and worked to comfort and help others in his daily life. After his passing in September 2015 at the age of 26, Shawn's generosity continued through organ donation. Shawn hadn't talked with his family about donation directly, but had a Donate Life wristband to show his support. "He wore that wristband faithfully," said his mom Diane McMullen. "Even though we did not know he had it until he died, we noticed it in all the photos afterward." Four men and one woman received organ transplants because of Shawn's generosity. Scott Hetsko, a meteorologist in Rochester at ABC affiliate WHAM 13, was the recipient of Shawn’s heart.
The McMullen family has established a foundation in Shawn’s name, Shawn’s Heroes for Life, which is committed to carrying out goodness through assistance, awareness and education regarding Veterans in need and organ donation. This Saturday’s event is held annually the second weekend in November to celebrate Shawn’s birthday and Veteran’s Day. In addition to the opportunity to donate blood, there will also be a silent auction, raffle items, and food.
Please help to support the community and Shawn’s Heroes for Life on November 9th. As the only community blood bank in WNY, ConnectLife needs your help to ensure local hospitals have blood available for local patients in need. To make an appointment to donate please call 716.529.4270, or visit www.shawnsheroesforlife.com for more information.
