ConnectLife Urges Memorial Day Weekend Blood Donations

Tickets to be raffled to major league baseball game

As Memorial Day approaches, ConnectLife says the local and national blood supply remains at a critically low level. This is especially concerning as we enter “trauma season,” the period from Memorial Day to Labor Day when statistics show emergency rooms and trauma centers are often at their busiest.

Following a trauma in which a patient has experienced major blood loss, Massive Transfusion Protocol may occur. In these cases, there can be a rapid administration of total blood volume (10-20 red cell units for adults). While only 3% of trauma patients will receive a massive transfusion (>10 units red blood cells in 24 hours), these patients consume 70% of all blood transfused at a trauma center.

It is vital that all who are eligible to donate consider giving now for local patients in need. ConnectLife is the primary supplier of blood for WNY, including Kaleida Health, ECMC, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, Eastern Niagara Health, Wyoming County Community Health System, Olean General Hospital, Brooks-TLC Health System and Bradford Regional Medical Center.

All presenting blood donors 5/28-5/31 at a ConnectLife Neighborhood Blood Donation Center will be entered to win 1 of 2 pairs of tickets to the June 16th major league baseball game at Sahlen Field.
