Amanda Okie is a new Unyts blood donor and volunteer. Amanda shares her story about what her experience with donation is like.
I recently began donating blood with Unyts, this past June to be exact. It all began from hearing about the drives through the school from my health teacher. I was very skeptical about donating at first and I was definitely very nervous.
I had heard about the blood shortages we have in WNY and that made me want to contribute to the community even more. I anticipated that it would hurt really badly and surprisingly it didn't hurt one bit. I felt great after donating. I told my parents, friends and family, "I just saved three lives today and I feel great".
I had a wonderful experience with the Unyts phlebotomists. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. I plan on donating every opportunity I get. After my donation, I went online and signed up to become a Unyts volunteer and help run the local drives as well. It's a heartwarming experience because you never know when you or a loved one may need blood. It's wonderful knowing that you're helping the community and saving lives each time. People that donate are heroes no matter how you look at it.
As a future nurse, I recommend donating to every person out there. You're saving lives!! And that's the greatest gift in my book.
