“To think 1 hour of my time could save up to 3 lives, why wouldn't I do that?” says Tom Ryan who is a regular O negative donor with Unyts. Tom started giving blood in high school, mainly for the free t-shirts and snacks, and has continued to do so ever since. Tom learned that Unyts distributes all blood donations to local hospitals, and he is proud to say that his donations could have saved someone’s life that he might pass one day on the street, unknowingly.
Because Tom’s blood type is O negative, he is a universal donor, and his blood can be used to save anyone in need. Tom was a whole blood donor until he heard about double-reds and how Unyts is able to collect twice the blood in one visit. Since then, he has been donating exclusively double-reds.
Tom always says that the best part about donating blood is knowing he only has to give a few hours of his time a year to save actual lives in Western New York.
In his own words…
“In a world that is filled with hopelessness, I take pride in giving blood and changing multiple lives forever! Plus, I love the Lorna Doone cookies and the snacks afterwards!”
“Unyts does an incredible job making you feel special for giving. They also have an O negative donor program and the blood donor website that is very easy to use to find a blood drive near you. Being a Donor for Life member helps keep track of when you are able to donate again, allowing you to maximize your giving each year.”
