Peter Betz of Rome, NY became an eye and tissue donor upon his passing in September 2016.

“Peter was a loving man, he gave all to his friends and family,” recalled his wife Irene. “He loved his motorcycle and helping me with our huge garden and vegetable stand. He always helped people.”

Known to many friends as “Dickie,” he was a US Air Force veteran and a member of the American Legion. “At the wake, everyone said how he helped them when their loved ones passed,” said Irene. “We had over 400 people.”

Peter was born in the Bronx, and later made his home in Central New York. Irene said, “He had a huge family in New York City but he wanted to live with me on the farm with chickens and our great kids Bea and his son Petey, and later his four wonderful grandkids, Lily, Paul, James and little Patrick.”

Peter died following a motorcycle crash in Remsen, NY on September 21, 2016. “He actually saved his passenger on the motorcycle, giving his life for her, like he always did helping people,” explained Irene.

His family generously agreed to donation through the Central New York Eye and Tissue Bank, a division of Unyts.

“At first I was very sad giving his eyes, bones and skin after his terrible death,” said Irene. “Now I feel that this was what he wanted, helping people and going on through them.”

Peter worked at Midstate Correctional Facility. “He was a correction officer for many years and was going to retire this year,” said Irene. “He was only 55 and I was with him for 33 years. I miss him so much. He was a great man.”
