Restoring Sight - Miguel's Story

Miguel Santos has seen more clearly for over 30 years, thanks to the selflessness of a cornea donor and the donor’s family. In 1993, Santos was suffering from keratoconus, a degenerative disorder of the eye. While his left eye was unaffected, he became legally blind in his right eye and needed surgery. Santos received a cornea transplant which restored his vision.
“I will always need glasses, but I can see,” Santos said.
Santos is grateful for the generosity of his donors and their families. “It’s always difficult to lose someone, but to then make that decision to share and to know that their loved one is still alive out there – both spiritually and also in someone who has benefitted – I find it is very important to make that person proud,” he said.
“I am active in the community and try to assist a lot of people, and I hope that I give tribute to those people that I’ve benefited from,” Santos said. “I hope that I make them proud that I’m really contributing.”
