ConnectLife puts out a plea for blood donors as the summer shortage hits
Donors could be among the first to see a preseason game at the new stadium!
The need for blood never ends at Western New York hospitals, but it does go through stretches when donors are much harder to find. That’s what they are dealing with now as summer holidays, vacations and activities make the chairs much harder to fill at ConnectLife centers and blood drives around the region.
Western New York’s only community blood bank is asking local donors to take an hour of their day to help make sure the emergency supply at local medical centers is there when it’s needed most. As a thank you, all donors will get a Delta Sonic gift card and will be entered to win a pair of tickets to one of the upcoming preseason games at the new stadium in Orchard Park.
“The drop in summer donations comes at the worst time for local hospitals,” said Sarah Diina, Senior Director of Communications & External Affairs at ConnectLife. “All of the extra traffic from summer driving means more car accidents. And when a single accident victim can need up to a hundred pints of blood, that can drain supplies quickly, as we saw in the tragic thruway bus crash almost a year ago.”
Donors will get an extra thank you for donating in the lead-up to the 4th of July, when those chairs are the hardest to fill. Anyone who donates from June 27th through July 4th will get an exclusive “Stars & Stripes & Saving Lives” shirt to show off their donor pride.
All the blood donated to ConnectLife stays local, helping nearly every hospital in WNY’s eight counties maintain safe inventory levels. Donation appointments are available at centers in Williamsville, West Seneca, and Tonawanda, as well as mobile donation sites around the area each day. To schedule an appointment, visit ConnectLifeGiveBlood.org or call 716.529.4270.
