Lifesavers gather again to donate blood in honor of recovering NY State Trooper

Eight months after New York State Police Sergeant Station Commander Sam Mattina was badly hurt in a motorcycle crash, his friends and family are once again calling on the community to help them pay forward the lifesaving care he received.

They’ve partnered with ConnectLife for the second blood drive this coming Sunday, May 18th from 10am-3pm at the State Police Lockport Barracks at 6566 Dysinger Rd. The first In Support of Sergeant Station Commander Sam Mattina blood drive last October welcomed more than 60 donors, collecting blood for as many as 170 patients at Western New York Hospitals.

Sgt. Mattina remains in recovery from the motorcycle accident in September 2024 and while he has significant loss of the use of the right side of his body, he says every day is a gift from God to spend with family and loved ones.

“I have donated blood numerous times in the past but never would have thought I would be the one in need of it,” says Mattina. “It is truly vital in the lifesaving care that is provided in the local hospitals. Every donation helps to save lives. Thank you to the community and especially the members of the New York State Police for their unending support.”

Family and friends are among the donors who will be at the drive helping provide those lifesaving gifts to local hospitals.

Donors at the drive will get ConnectLife’s May reward of two Buffalo Bisons tickets for use at any Bisons game (excluding the Independence Eve special event). They also receive reward points with each donation that can be used in ConnectLife’s online store for gift cards, clothing and more.

All the blood donated to ConnectLife stays local, helping nearly every hospital in WNY’s eight counties maintain safe inventory levels. To schedule an appointment, visit ConnectLifeGiveBlood.org or call 716.529.4270.
